If I were to say ‘European lakeside boutique hotel’ where would come to mind? Of all the options one could imagine, Lake Wulpińskie – otherwise known as the ‘Lake District’ of Poland, Warmia & Masuria – is unlikely to have been the first. Yet that is exactly where home away from home Hotel Galery69, part of White Line Hotels, lies in harmony with its stunning natural surroundings.
This dwelling sits in splendid isolation near the historic town of Olsztyn – just under three hours’ drive from the capital, Warsaw. Hotel Galery69 seems effortlessly homely, which masks the fact that all the furnishings are handmade (by the owners no less) with locally sourced materials. With just 20 rooms, it retains its intimate feel.
From the hotel to the location – Hotel Galery69 is a truly remarkable escape. For the more adventurous, a frozen lake allows for ‘ice sailing’ – the seamless glide of an iceboat across the head of Wulpińskie. After braving the cold, guests can return to the hotel’s heated swimming pool and spa. In keeping with authenticity, the food is more than approachable – delicious, hearty and mostly regional dishes made from fresh local ingredients, making one feel at home.
Above all, its tranquillity is what defines it. The owners – Małgosia and Wojciech, a local couple, both artists – are keen to make the place one where peace is conducive to creativity through the reconnection with nature. This is particularly so in winter. The snow muffles any disturbances (not that there are any), and a calm descends on the hotel, shielded by the deep green forest. With true revitalising escapes increasingly hard to find, one should look no further than the Polish Lake District.
